DOS AND DON'TS FOR STARTING A WRITING GROUP

DOS AND DON'TS FOR STARTING A WRITING GROUP - Nothing has done more to transform my writing than being a part of a weekly writing group. But starting one and making it stick can be daunting. During the first half of class, I'll go through who you should seek out and how to structure your meetings and communication to build a group that maximizes productivity while building a lasting rapport. During the second half, we'll do several rounds of "speed dating" where you can get to know some fellow writers and see if you sync up.

APPLYING SKETCH PRINCIPALS TO DRAMATIC WRITING

Is it surprising that one of the greatest sketch writers of all time (Jordan Peele) went on to be an Oscar winning screenwriter? Not at all! A bevy of screenwriters use sketch writing principles to help make scenes come alive and use pattern to help structure their work. Join us to dissect scenes from Midsommar, Marie Antoinette, and Get Out (among others) and see how you can employ these principles to breath new life into your scenes. During the second half, we'll workshop a scenes from your own projects that you'd like to polish or restructure. (DISCLAIMER: These movies will be spoiled for you, so watch them now. The scenes we will screen include nudity, suicide and one absolutely gruesome death scene)

PLAY/PAUSE (6 weeks, starting 10/11, 7pm-9pm EST)

Jump-start your genre parody writing by getting granular with Hollywood movies.  We'll screen trope-filled films and dissect every possible game out of it that we can find.  Every time a new game is spotted, we'll stop the film and discuss. From there, you'll take these ideas to write sketches, that we'll be refining throughout the class. I cannot guarantee the film will be good, but the sketches will be. (DISCLAMER: Some films may include sexual situations, violence, and characters using offensive or objectionable language)

Max Class Size: 10 Students
Class Meets 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8, 11/15
